Winter Driving and Tyre Rules in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Planning a winter trip to Sarajevo or the ski resorts? Here is what you need to know about winter tyres, snow chains and safe driving on snow and ice in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Winter in Bosnia and Herzegovina is beautiful, with snowy mountains, quiet old towns and some of the best-value skiing in Europe. It also brings real driving challenges. If you are picking up a car rental at Sarajevo airport between November and April, a little preparation goes a long way.

Mandatory winter equipment: what the rules say

Bosnia and Herzegovina has a mandatory winter equipment period that generally runs from 15 November to 15 April. During this time, vehicles are expected to be equipped for winter conditions. In practice this usually means one of the following:

  • Winter tyres (marked M+S or with the snowflake symbol) with a minimum tread depth, commonly 4 mm
  • Summer tyres with snow chains carried in the vehicle and fitted when conditions require

Police can check your equipment, and rules may differ slightly by road type or be updated over time. Please check current regulations before you travel.

The good news: when you rent a car in Sarajevo with us, rental cars are equipped for winter conditions during the mandatory period. Browse our fleet to choose a model that suits your trip, and ask us about snow chains if you plan to head into the mountains.

Ski resorts near Sarajevo and mountain roads

Three popular resorts are within easy reach of the city:

  • Jahorina – the largest resort, roughly an hour from Sarajevo, with a winding mountain road
  • Bjelašnica – an Olympic venue south-west of the city, known for night skiing
  • Igman – close to Bjelašnica, with scenic forest roads and cross-country trails

Main access roads are usually cleared, but conditions change quickly with fresh snowfall. On steeper mountain sections, snow chains may be required by signage or police even if you have winter tyres. Practise fitting chains once in a dry, safe place before you need them.

How to drive safely on snow and ice

  • Accelerate, brake and steer gently. Sudden movements cause skids.
  • Leave at least three times your normal following distance.
  • Use a lower gear on descents instead of riding the brakes.
  • Watch for black ice on bridges, shaded corners and early in the morning.
  • Clear snow from the whole car – windows, lights, mirrors and the roof. Snow sliding off the roof can blind you or the driver behind.

Sarajevo and many river valleys are prone to dense fog and temperature inversions in winter. Use dipped headlights and fog lights where appropriate, and slow down when visibility drops.

Plan ahead before every winter drive

Before setting off, check road conditions. BIHAMK, the national automobile club, publishes regular road reports covering closures, snow, fog and chain requirements. A few more habits are worth adopting:

  • Keep your fuel tank above half, in case of delays or closed roads
  • Carry an emergency kit: warm clothing, blanket, water, snacks, torch, phone charger, ice scraper and a small shovel
  • Allow extra time and tell someone your route on remote roads

Start your winter trip at the airport

Collecting your car at Sarajevo Airport means you can be on the road to the slopes or the city within minutes of landing. Drive calmly, respect the conditions and enjoy everything a Bosnian winter has to offer.
